5 Tips to Save Money by Greening Your Commute

5 Tips to Save Money
One commonly known way to make your travel more eco-friendly would be to drive a hybrid car, but that's not the only way to go green on the road. Here are five easy green travel tips to lessen your environmental impact and save money on transportation costs, without having to buy a new car.

  1. Slow down. Simply driving slower can conserve fuel and significantly increase your car's efficiency. That means avoid driving fast on the highway, jackrabbit starts and quick stops. In fact, aggressive driving can lower your gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds according to the Department of Energy.

  2. Lighten your load. The more weight you carry in your vehicle, the more energy you consume. For example, don't carry golf clubs in your car's trunk everyday if you aren't planning to hit the links.

  3. Get a tune-up. Be sure to get regular maintenance checks and oil changes, which will help your car use less fuel and cut down on emissions. Check tire pressure, hoses, filters and spark plugs on a regular basis. Cars with well-maintained engines and properly inflated tires could save up to $0.26/per gallon of gas.

  4. Avoid driving when possible. Of course, avoiding driving altogether is the greenest way to approach transportation. Whenever possible, consider walking or biking to your destination. Take public transportation regularly, or participate in a car sharing program.

  5. Stay home. Get creative to find ways to keep your car off the road. For instance, plan your dinner menus a week or two in advance and do all your grocery shopping in one trip for one or two weeks. Rather than going out for a movie, make popcorn and watch one at home.
Think about how you can apply some of these tips to your week and you'll be on the road to becoming a green commuter in no time.
