The small ByMile device tracks the number of miles you drive, so your monthly bill will be based on how many miles you drove in a prior month. Your bill will change each month, but you will never be charged for more than 150 miles per day.

Enroll in ByMile when you get Liberty Mutual auto insurance and we'll ship you your device right away.
Remember to sign the Terms & Conditions.

Plug the device into the OBD-II port of your car. Be sure to install within 21 days of receiving it so we can start charging you accurately for the miles you drive.
The port is usually located under the dashboard.

A: After you purchase your policy, you’ll receive an email asking you to create an account and sign your policy forms, including the ByMile Terms and Conditions. Once you have accepted the Terms and Conditions, we will ship your device. It’s important to plug in your device as soon as you receive it so we can start charging you accurately for the miles you drive.

If you do not agree to the Terms and Conditions within 21 days, ByMile will be removed from your policy resulting in an adjustment to your premium.

A: If you need to change your insured vehicle, please call the ByMile service team at 1-800-216-3833 for assistance. Please note that your premium may change depending on the type of vehicle you insure as a replacement.

A: Yes. You can opt out of ByMile at any time. To do so, contact your local sales office or call the ByMile service team at 1-800-216-3833, and they can remove ByMile from your policy.

A: When you opt out of ByMile, we will send you a prepaid return envelope along with instructions for removing and returning the device. Please return the device within 21 days to avoid being charged a fee. The device should not be returned to a local sales office.

A: Your device will include easy-to-follow installation instructions along with contact information in case you need assistance. The steps for installation are as follows:

1. Check the sticker. Look at the sticker on your device to make sure it is correctly matched to your vehicle. If you have multiple vehicles, be aware that each device is designated for a specific vehicle.

2. Plug in your device. Simply plug the device firmly into your vehicle’s OBD-II port. The OBD-II port is usually located under the dashboard on the driver’s side and may have a cover. Visit LibertyMutual.InstallerNet.com to locate your vehicle’s OBD-II port.

3. Is it working? After plugging in your device, you’ll receive a confirmation email that it’s working. Please note that the confirmation email may be delayed until the device is able to pick up cellular service. If your device doesn’t seem to be working properly, please unplug it and call the ByMile service team at 1-800-216-3833.

4. Good to go! Once your device has been successfully activated, simply start driving as you normally would.

5. Download the app. For real-time mileage tracking, download the ByMile app and pair it with your ByMile device.

A: No. You must keep your device installed in your vehicle in order to participate in ByMile. If the device is removed for any reason other than vehicle maintenance, you may be charged additional miles each day that it is not plugged in.

A: If your vehicle is in a service shop, the device can be temporarily removed if requested by a mechanic but it must be re-installed immediately after the work is completed.

A: No. The app is optional for this program; however we encourage you to use it to help you keep track of your mileage.

Driving data, usage, and privacy

A: A complete list of collected data can be viewed at https://www.libertymutual.com/telematics-data. This list will be updated as the data changes. The only data that will impact your premium are listed below:

  • Mileage
  • Technology Connection Event (when your device is connected)
  • Technology Disconnection Event (when your device is disconnected)
The data we collect will not affect either policy cancellation or nonrenewal. We may retain the collected data indefinitely, subject to state requirements. We may use the data on an aggregated basis for research purposes, and we reserve the right to collect data as long as the technology is in use.
